Every line on this diagram is a passenger railway or tramway. Heavy railways are thick lines and tramways are thin lines. Solid lines are regular public transport services. Cased (or pinstriped) lines are Tourist trains. As far as possible, line colours match those used by the rail operator.
Stations are circles. Hollow circles are stations (or tram stops) from which you can hop on without a booking - just tap on with your smartcard. If there is a solid disc in the station, you MUST book ahead and reserve a seat. A hollow ring in the station disc means you MAY book a seat, but it is not compulsory. Travel entirely between tram stops with green ticks in them is totally free.
The white regions on the map are the Smartcard regions within which you can usually just hop on a train or tram and tap on. Outside those areas, in the yellow regions, generally you need to buy a paper ticket or reserve a seat before boarding your train.
The large grey numbers next to the lines indicate the approximate travel time, in hours, from the relevant major State capital city.
Station circles filled with white are served by electric trains, yellow are diesel trains, grey are steam trains and blue are horse trams.
Track gauge and electrification type is shown by green lettering near the ends of each line.
The diagram is not to scale, and the position of lines and towns relative to the coastline is indicative only.
About us.
Since 1996 Australian Rail Maps has published online maps, timetables and journey planners to help visitors, residents, commuters and travellers get the most from Australia's extensive but un-integrated train, tram, bus and ferry networks.
I am not associated with any transport operators and until 2026, most income came from website advertising.
Train travel, and public transport generally, has so much potential, and I want to share the possibilites with everyone. Enjoy your travels.
