Vline operate a co-ordinated train/bus service that links Melbourne to Adelaide in daylight. A train departs Melbourne Southern Cross station early each morning for Bendigo. Two hours later, when you arrive at Bendigo, change to the connecting Vline Daylink bus to Adelaide. You will arrive in Adelaide late in the afternoon. This service operates every day. The bus between Bendigo and Adelaide has reserved seats, so you must book in advance. Trains between Melbourne and Bendigo do not have reserved seats, but when you book your ticket you can include the Melbourne to Bendigo and Bendigo to Adelaide legs on the same ticket so there is no need to pay for two separate tickets.
Vline run three trains each day from Melbourne Southern Cross station to Albury departing Melbourne in the morning, around midday and in the late afternoon arriving Albury about three and a half hours later. You can also board these trains at Broadmeadows station in Melbourne's suburbs and at Seymour and other towns along the way. These trains offer first and economy class seating and have an on board cafe bar from which you can purchase meals, snacks and drinks. Seating is reserved so you should purchase your ticket and reserve your seat before travelling. You cannot use Myki cards to travel on these trains north of Seymour, all Albury travellers should have a paper ticket.
NSW Trainlink's Melbourne XPT train runs twice each day from Melbourne Southern Cross station to Albury (then on to Sydney). The journey to Albury takes a little over three hours. The first train departs Melbourne early in the morning and arrives Albury a little before noon. The night train departs Melbourne in the evening and arrives in
Albury late that same evening. These trains are fully reserved and have first and economy class seats plus a cafe bar from which you can purchase meals, snacks and drinks. You must purchase your ticket and reserve your seat before travelling.
Vline operate a regular train service from Melbourne Southern Cross station to Bairnsdale. There are three trains each day departing early in the morning, early afternoon and in the early evening. On Saturdays the afternoon train departs a little earlier (around noon) and on Sundays there are just two trains - one in the morning and one in the evening. The journey takes about three and a half hours. You can also board all Bairnsdale trains en-route at Melbourne Flinders Street station and at
Caulfield and Dandenong stations in the South-Eastern suburbs. Seating is reserved so you should purchase your ticket and reserve your seat before travelling. You cannot use Myki cards to travel on these trains east of Traralgon, all Bairnsdale travellers should have a paper ticket. The morning and midday trains offer economy class seating only, but the evening train offers first and economy class seating and has an on board cafe bar from which you can purchase meals, snacks and drinks. In addition to trains all the way to Bairnsdale, Vline also run buses between Traralgon and Bairnsdale connecting at Traralgon with trains from Melbourne. If the times of the three daily trains don't suit, you might find these bus connections more convenient.

You can also board most Ballarat trains at Sunshine or Footscray stations in Melbourne's western suburbs. Note that most Ballarat trains are actually destined for places further afield such as Wendouree, Ararat or Maryborough. All trains to and through Ballarat convey economy class seats only and are non-reserved. Simply top up your Myki card before you travel, then touch on and off at the station before you board and after you leave the train.
VLine operate a regular train service from Melbourne Southern Cross station to Bendigo. As a general rule, trains depart every hour for the two hour journey to Bendigo and you can also board most of these trains at Footscray or Sunbury stations in Melbourne's Western suburbs. Note that most trains to Bendigo are actually destined for places further afield such as Eaglehawk, Epsom, Echuca or Swan Hill, and all trains to any of those locations will call at Bendigo station. All these trains convey economy class seats and are non-reserved - except for trains to Swan Hill which also have first class seats and a cafe bar and do offer reserved seats. Simply top up your Myki card before you travel, then touch on and off at the station before you board and after you leave the train, or if you're travelling on a Swan Hill train, reserve your seat in advance.
To travel to Brisbane, you will need to first catch a train to Sydney then change to another train bound for Brisbane. NSW Trainlink's Melbourne XPT train runs twice each day from Melbourne Southern Cross station to Sydney Central station. The whole journey from Melbourne to Brisbane, with a few hours to sightsee in Sydney will take you about a day and a half. Both these trains, from Melbourne to Sydney and from Sydney to Brisbane offer first and economy class sitting accommodation as well as twin bunk first class sleeping berths. If you prefer travelling in daylight, you can travel to Brisbane by catching NSW Trainlink's Melbourne XPT departure from Melbourne Southern Cross station that departs early each morning. You can then stay overnight in Sydney before early the next morning catching NSW Trainlink's Casino XPT train from Sydney Central
station to Casino, then changing to a connecting bus, also operated by NSW Trainlink. The bus takes you from Casino via the Gold Coast to Brisbane Roma Street station, arriving there late that same evening. The whole journey from Melbourne to Brisbane takes about a day and a half including an overnight stay in Sydney. Both these trains, from Melbourne to Sydney and from Sydney to Brisbane offer first and economy class sitting accommodation and have an on board cafe from which you can purchase meals, snacks and drinks. All seats on the trains and on the connecting bus are reserved, and you should book in advance.
This is an epic odyssey right up the east coast of mainland Australia that sees you travel on at least 3 trains. You start by hopping aboard the Melbourne XPT that departs Melbourne Southern Cross station in the evening and travels overnight before arriving at Sydney Central station early the following morning. Then, you can spend a few hours in Sydney before catching NSW Trainlink's Brisbane XPT which departs Sydney Central in the afternoon, travels overnight then arrives at Brisbane Roma Street station early the following morning. The whole journey from Melbourne to Brisbane, with a few hours to sightsee in Sydney will take you about a day and a half. After spending the morning in Brisbane, you can board the the modern Spirit of Queensland train that departs Brisbane Roma Street Station for Cairns five days per week in the mid afternoon (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday). It travels northwards through the evening, overnight and through the next day before arriving at Cairns station late the following afternoon. This is arguably Australias most modern and technologically advanced passenger train. All three of these trains, from Melbourne to Sydney, from Sydney to Brisbane and from Brisbane to Cairns offer first and economy class sitting accommodation. The first two also offer twin bunk first class sleeping berths whilst the Queensland train offers lie-flat 'rail beds' instead of compartments. All these trains also have an on board cafe from which you can purchase meals, snacks and drinks. All seats and berths are reserved, and you should book in advance.
You can travel from Melbourne to Canberra by train all the way, but unless you have a religious aversion to buses, there are a few convenient co-ordinated train-bus routes that are quicker and more convenient. NSW Trainlink offer a connecting bus service from Cootamundra to Canberra via Yass that connects with the train from Melbourne. Catch NSW Trainlink's Melbourne XPT train that departs Melbourne Southern Cross station early each morning destined for Sydney. At Cootamundra you change to a connecting NSW Trainlink bus that follows the railway to Yass then diverges down to Canberra Jolimont bus terminal arriving late afternoon. The combined train and bus journey from Melbourne to Canberra takes just a little over
eight hours. It is possible to stay on board the train all the way to Yass Junction station then change to this same bus there minimising the amount of bus travel, however NSW Trainlink prefer that you change at Cootamundra. If you prefer train travel, call NSW Trainlink and insist on the Yass Junction connection. The train and the bus are fully reserved so make sure you book your seat in advance. In addition to economy class seats, the train also has first class seats and it also has a cafe car from which you can purchase meals, snacks and drinks.
VLine also offer a co-ordinated train/bus service from Melbourne to Canberra via Albury called Canberra Link. From Melbourne Southern Cross station, you catch Vline's morning Albury train, and travel for a little over three hours before getting off at Albury. Then you board a Vline bus that takes you to Canberra in the mid afternoon. The whole journey takes about eight and a half hours. The train carries first and economy class seats and also has a cafe bar from which you can purchase meals, snacks and drinks. Seats on the train and on the connecting bus are reserved so you should book in advance.
VLine also offer a co-ordinated train/bus service from Melbourne to Canberra via Bairnsdale and Cooma. Called Capital Link, this service takes quite a different route to the above options, is a little longer, contains more bus travel and operates only on certain days of the week so you will need to check the timetable carefully. From Melbourne Southern Cross station, catch the early morning VLine train to Bairnsdale then change to a connecting VLine bus for the remainder of the journey up to Canberra where you will arrive in the evening. This journey will take you about ten and a half hours, of which less than four hours is by train. The train and the bus both offer economy class reserved seating, so you will need to book in advance. There are opportunities to purchase means and snacks at Bairnsdale while changing from train to bus and also at various stopovers during the bus journey.
It is possible to travel the whole way from Melbourne to Canberra by train. Catch the NSW Trainlink Melbourne XPT train that departs Melbourne Southern Cross station each morning destined for Sydney. After travelling through most of the day, you get off at Goulburn station in the late afternoon and after three to four hours (time for an evening meal at a nearby restaurant) catch the NSW Trainlink Canberra Xplorer train from Goulburn to Canberra railway station arriving after 10pm. The whole journey from Melbourne to Canberra takes about thirteen and a half hours. You can aternatively do this trip overnight by leaving Melbourne late evening, and changing in Goulburn in the wee small hours of the morning before arriving in Canberra late morning. This will require a five or six hour wait at Goulburn - from 4am to 9:30am. In addition to economy and first class seats, the trains have cafe cars from which you can purchase meals, snacks and drinks. The trains are fully reserved so make sure you book your seat in advance.
This is a journey of a lifetime from the south to the north of mainland Australia. Think of it as a luxury land cruise, a great experience, but it is not cheap. You have four hours in Alice Springs before the train heads north again overnight to Katherine where another 3-4 hour stop is scheduled on the following morning. Finally, The Ghan departs Katherine around noon and heads to Darwin arriving there early eveing on Tuesdays. This is a luxury train that carries sleeping berth passengers only and meals are fully inclusive. Obviously this is a fully-reserved train and it sometimes books out well in advance, so get in early and reserve your sleeping berths.
VLine operate one or two trains per day from Melbourne to Echuca. Mid each afternoon and also early each Saturday and Sunday morning, a train departs Melbourne Southern Cross station bound for Echuca via Bendigo. The journey takes about three and a quarter hours. These trains offer economy class seating only and do not have any on board cafe bar service. You cannot use your Myki card to travel north of Epsom so you will need to purchase a paper ticket from the station, or you can buy a ticket online. Note that in addition to these direct Echuca trains, Vline also operate some buses between Bendigo and Echuca/Moama that connect at Bendigo with trains from Melbourne. You may find the times of these services more convenient.
Vline also operate direct buses between Melbourne and Echuca (and onward to Deniliquin) that don't run via Bendigo, but run direct up the Northern highway via Heathcote. These buses generally depart only once or twice per day destined for either Moama or Deniliquin. You cannot use you Myki card to travel on these buses and you should purchase your paper ticket in advance either at the station or you can book online.
VLine operate a regular train service from Melbourne Southern Cross station to Geelong. Most trains also run through to South Geelong station and many also continue through to Marshall and Waurn Ponds. Many also serve Lara, Corio, North Shore and North Geelong stations en route. On weekdays days there is a train every 20 minutes with more
in peak periods, and on weekends there is a train every 40 minutes. The journey takes a little under one hour. You can also board most
Geelong bound trains at Footscray and Sunshine stations in Melbourne's western suburbs. You may also travel to Geelong on any VLine Warrnambool train. Some Geelong trains offer first class as well
as economy class seats. Geelong trains do not have reserved seats, so just buy or top up your Myki card, touch on, hop on and find a seat.
You can now also travel from Melbourne to Geelong on the twice daily Port Phillip Ferries service. It takes a little longer than the train, is not as frequent and it costs more, but it can be a more scenic and relaxing way to travel. Twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening, the Geelong Flyer (yes it's a ferry not the train) departs from Melbourne's Docklands (behind Docklands stadium, right near the cow up a tree) for the journey to Geelong Cunningham Pier. You can purchase tickets on board or in advance. The end to end journey is scheduled to take about an hour and a half.
To travel to the Gold Coast, you will need to first catch a train to Sydney then change to another train bound for Brisbane and then get a local service from Brisbane down to the Gold Coast. NSW Trainlink's Melbourne XPT train departs Melbourne in the evening and travels overnight before arriving at Sydney Central station early the following morning. Then, you can spend a few hours in Sydney before catching NSW Trainlink's Brisbane XPT. The train departs Sydney in the afternoon, travels overnight then arrives in Brisbane early the following morning. All travel on the trains is in reserved seats (economy class or first class) or sleeping berths which must be pre-booked in advance. They also feature an onboard cafe from which you can purchase meals and drinks. From Brisbane Roma Street station you can then catch a Gold Coast bound QR citytrain to Helensvale station (there are two trains every hour - and you can use a Go Card or buy a ticket at Brisbane Roma Street - no reservations necessary). At Helensvale you then change to Gold Coast Light Rail which will take you to the very heart of Surfers Paradise. Light Rail services are covered by your Go Card.

This train travels through the day and arrives at Sydney Central station that same evening. You can then stay overnight in Sydney before early the next morning catching NSW Trainlink's Casino XPT train from Sydney Central station to Casino, then changing to a connecting bus, also operated by NSW Trainlink. The bus (which is destined for Brisbane) takes you from Casino to the Gold Coast arriving there late that evening. The whole journey from Melbourne to Surfers Paradise takes about a day and a half including an overnight stay in Sydney. All travel on the trains and buses is in reserved seats (economy class or first class) or sleeping berths which must be pre-booked in advance. Trains also feature an onboard cafe from which you can purchase meals and drinks.
The Spirit of Tasmania ferry departs every evening from Melbourne's Station Pier for the ten hour sailing across Bass Strait to East Devonport in northern Tasmania, arriving there early the following morning. From East Devonport, catch the connecting Tasmanian Redline Express
bus for the four hour journey to Hobart via Launceston. This will get you into Hobart around midday. The travel time from Melbourne to Hobart is about fourteen or fifteen hours. At peak times of the years, daytime sailings also operate that depart mid morning and arrive in East Devonport late in the afternoon. Bus connections to Hobart are not always necessarily scheduled in connection with these daytime sailings. All travel on the ferry and on the connecting buses should be booked in advance.
VLine operate up to four daily services between Melbourne and Horsham. You start by catching a train from Southern Cross station, and travelleing to either Ballarat or Ararat, then you change to a connecting Vline bus for the remainder of your journey. The whole trip takes around four and a half hours. You cannot use a Myki card to travel west of Wendouree, so you will need to purchase a paper ticket - you can do that online or at the station before you travel.
On Tuesday and Saturday mornings you can board Great Southern Railways 'Overland' train at Melbourne Southern Cross station. This train travels via Horsham on its way to Adelaide. The journey is not as speedy as the Vline service, but it is very comfortable and can be less expensive too. The journey is by train all the way, and you arrive at Horsham station early in the afternoon. First and economy class seats are available, and the tran has an onboard cafe car from which you can purchase meals, snacks and drinks. All travel on The Overland is reserved so you must book in advance.
Skybus operate an express bus service between Melbourne Southern Cross station and Melbourne Avalon Airport. Buses operate to connect with all flight arrivals and departures. The journey takes 50 to 60 minutes. You can buy tickets at the airport or online in advance, but reservations are not necessary, just show up and hop on board.
Skybus operate frequent and speedy express bus service between Melbourne Southern Cross station and Melbourne Tullamarine Airport. Buses call at all terminals, and operate every 10 minutes or so during the day, and hourly throughout the night 24 hours per day. The journey takes 20 to 25 minutes. You can buy tickets at the airport or online in advance, but reservations are not necessary, just show up and hop on board.
Vline operate a co-ordinated train and bus service between Melbourne and Mildura. Catch a morning or evening train from Melbourne Southern Cross station to Swan Hill, then change to a connecting bus from Swan Hill to Mildura. There are also additional bus connections from trains arriving at Bendigo early afternoon connecting with buses all the way through to Mildura. These services run every day, and the end to end travel time is about 8 hours. You can't use your Myki on Swan Hill trains and buses to Mildura.. These services have reserved seats so you should pre-book you seat and get your ticket in advance.
Vline operate a direct overnight bus service from Melbourne to Mildura via Ballarat. The bus departs Melbourne Southern Cross station late each night, travels through the night and arrives in Mildura early the following morning. This service is pre-booked so you should reserve your seat in advance.
In winter months, Vline operate bus services to the Victorian snowfield of Mount Buller. Buses depart (year round) from Melbourne Southern Cross station direct to Mansfield. In winter, you can then change buses at Mansfield for the connecting service up to Mount Buller. All of these buses are reserved so you should pre-book your ticket to be assured of a seat.

periods to let passengers experience the outback. The whole journey from Melbourne to Perth takes around three days including an overnight stay and daytime sightseeing stopover in Adelaide. This is not a cheap way to travel to Perth, but it is luxurious and something of an experience of a lifetime. The Indian Pacific can book out long in advance, so you should book early.
xpress Vline buses depart Melbourne Southern Cross terminal headed for Yarram. At Koo Wee Rup, change buses for the connecting Vline bus service to Cowes (Phillip Island). These buses are co-ordinated so that if the bus from Melbourne happens to run late then connecting bus will wait. There are two to four of these servcies each day. The whole end to end journey time is about 3 hours. You cannot use yourMyki card to travel on these buses, and you will need a paper ticket to travel.. You can purchase tickets online or at the station before you depart.
You can travel to Phillip Island by train and ferry. Catch a Frankston line Metro train from any downtown Melbourne railway station. They depart every 10 minutes. Stay on board until you get to the terminus at Frankston then off the train and change to a connecting train service from Frankston to Stony Point. Stony Point trains depart right across the platform from your arrival from Melbourne at Frankston. The Stony Point train runs between 6 and 10 times each day, so check the imetable for the times of connecting electric trains from Melbourne. Then from Stony Point walk about 300 metres fromm the railway station to the ferry wharf from where the Westernport Ferry departs for French Island and Phillip Island. The ferry sails only 4 or 5 times per day, but it is timed to connect with the train arrivals from Frankston. The entire journey from Melbourne to Phillip Island takes about 3 hours. You can use your Myki card to travel frm Melbourne to Frankston and from Frankston to Stony Point, but you will need to purchase a separate ticket for the ferry, which you can purchase on board.

The journey takes a little over two hours. Most trains terminate at Traralgon, however trains bound for Sale and Bairnsdale will also allow you to travel to Traralgon. You can also board all Traralgon trains en-route at
Melbourne Flinders Street station and at Caulfield, Clayton and Dandenong stations in the South-Eastern suburbs. All Traralgon trains also serve Warragul, Moe and Morwell stations. You can use you Myki card to travel between Melbourne and Traralgon, so just top up and tap on before boarding. If you are travelling on one of the longer distance trains and wish to reserve a seat you can do that online if you wish.

Vline operate three or four trains daily from Melbourne Southern Cross station to Warrnambool via Geelong. Trains depart Southern Cross for the three and a quarter hour journey to Warrnambool.
