This map shows the railway networks of Australia as they were circa 1950. This was near the peak of the extent of the network prior to line closures and rationalisations that followed WW2
Goods and passenger railways are shown. Most rail routes at this time carried both types of train. The different rail gauges are indicated by line colours - legend at bottom left of diagram.
Not all stations are shown or named, and some line detail is not shown in areas of high density - particularly around the suburbs of major cities and in regards to sugar cane tramways in Queensland. For a more comprehensive map of cane tramways, visit
